Faithful Fathering, Requires Faithful Sonship
- Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father,
and attend to know understanding.
2 For I give you good doctrine,
forsake ye not my law.
3 For I was my father’s son,
tender and only beloved in the sight of my mother.
4 He taught me also, and said unto me,
Let thine heart retain my words:
keep my commandments, and live.
5 Get wisdom, get understanding:
forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth.
6 Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee:
love her, and she shall keep thee.
7 Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom:
and with all thy getting get understanding.
8 Exalt her, and she shall promote thee:
she shall bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her.
9 She shall give to thine head an ornament of grace:
a crown of glory shall she deliver to thee.
10 Hear, O my son, and receive my sayings;
and the years of thy life shall be many.
It is important that our sons embrace the wisdom and instructions of a Father, knowing that one day the son will become a Father. We can only give or pass on what has been placed inside of us. But if the sons are refusing to listen to instructions and follow the steps of wisdom. They are then forced to create their own path and find their own way.
Faithful Sonship requires humility. Even Jesus stated that I come not to do my own will, but the will of my father who sent me. Focusing on Sonship is not in any wise neglecting the responsibility of Fatherhood. However, even God had to become a Son, in order to become a Father (1 Timothy-3:16)
A Father’s responsibility is to create a foundation for his children to grow from and to launch from. But what good is it to give one a launching pad if they don’t have a safe place to land. The movie Hidden Figures gave us a good revelation of this in understanding that before we can boast about building a sure foundation for sending a man into orbit in order for him to capture a view of earth that we would never be privileged to behold from where we stand. We must make sure that we have the right calculations to create a safe re-entry for that same man to be able to return home and tell us the story of his journey.
Which required that we lay not one, but two foundations. A solid and sure foundation for man to launch from and a soft, more welcoming and safe foundation for man to land on and return home safely.
Luke-15 gives us a perfect example of this in the story of the prodigal son.
Even when our Fathers have laid a good foundation for our children to grow from and have access to a better future. They will not always make the right choices and decisions that places them within the life styles that we have imagined and purposed for them to be in. However, a good Father stands in forgiveness and unconditional love, that no matter what direction the son went in. He had another foundation that was already laid, one with a soft and welcoming place to land, HOME!
The father saw his son afar off and welcomed him with open arms, clothed him and celebrating his return. Never condemning him for the choices he made that made his life rough. But rejoicing in the fact that his son that was lost, was now found and had come to himself.
I send this devotion out to all of our fathers and sons today as we celebrate Fathers Day 2017
Rejoice that we have a Father that loves us unconditionally and declared that I will never leave you nor forsake you.
